Cranes

Without cranes, the world would quite possibly come to a stop, for they are involved in so many projects that make the world operate that their removal is out of the question. Not that anyone is suggesting we remove them, quite the opposite – they are employed in many industries, from construction (to move raw materials), transport (to load and unload goods from a boat or train etc), to manufacturing (putting together heavier machines). Therefore without them, importing and exporting goods would come to halt, along with vital construction of new buildings and machines.

A crane lifts objects using wires, chains and winders to manoeuvre them into a useful position. Before motors and electricity came into use they were powered by man through hoists, however the advent of steam helped develop cranes into what we are more familiar with today.

For the enormous amounts of tasks they perform there are many different designs that are in use, from tower cranes (to build the highest of buildings) to floating cranes and jib cranes.

Cranes have been around for a long time and they are showing no signs of disappearing any time soon.
